Many people fail to realize how important a handshake is, but in the world of business, it can be the difference between “make” and “break.” This can be the case for everything from landing a new job to sealing a business deal to even gaining a return customer! It is not difficult to give a good handshake – but first, you need to make sure you know the three components of a good handshake!

If you want to have a truly good handshake, you need to be able to transfer confidence from yourself to the person whose hand you are shaking; the first way to do this is to make sure you have a strong, firm grip when you shake hands. While you might already know that a strong, firm grip is important when shaking hands, make sure you also know that you should not overdo it! Remember, you are not trying to show the person how strong you are; you are simply trying to transfer confidence from yourself to them! The perfect place for your handshake to be is strong and firm, without being overpowering; when you shake hands with others, practice this handshake.

The duration of a handshake is another important aspect; you will show timidity if you pull away from the handshake too quickly, but you will make things awkward if you hold on too long. There is no set amount of time a handshake should last, but know that it needs to last long enough to do its job! Don’t pull away too quickly, but give a good, firm grip, give one or two firm pumps, and then you can safely end the handshake.

Eye contact is the one aspect of the handshake that so many people fail to keep in mind; this, of course, is the third element. You will stand out to others when you make eye contact as you shake hands, as so many others fail to remember to do this. In this way, you will complete the process of transferring confidence from yourself to the person with whom you are shaking hands.

When you simply follow these three steps, you will be able to give a handshake that inspires confidence; the handshake might be a small thing, but it can make a very big difference!
